Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini vs Samsung Galaxy S3 Review – specs and Features

Author: | Posted in Reviews, Samsung No comments

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a mobile phone that is still one of Samsungs most popular models; however, they have now made a smaller version of the S3. However, just like the iPad mini, the S3 mini has had a mixed reception, with some saying that it is a phone created for women and children who cannot handle the larger S3.

Are there any similarities between the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S3 mini?

The mini version does seem to be a lower quality device in many respects, but is that really so unexpected? The idea of shrinking something and yet making it more powerful would surely be reserved for a later model, and not a mini version of a current model.

The bare statistics

The Samsung Galaxy S3 mini has a processor that is 1GHz, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.5GHz. The mini screen is smaller as you may have imagined. It is an AMOLED 4 inch screen with 800 x 480 pixels. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an AMOLED 4.8 inch screen with 1280 x 720 pixels. The mini’s camera is a 5 megapixel whereas the larger S3’s camera is 8 mega pixels.

The mini is actually thicker than the larger S3 but obviously is smaller in size. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 8.6mm thick whereas the mini is 9.9mm thick. The mini weighs less at 111g against the full sized S3 at 133g. The battery for the mini is also of a lower power at 1500 mAh against the larger S3’s 2100 mAh, but that was to be expected, since the mini should have reduced functionality and therefore less need for a more powerful battery.

The mini is cheaper than the larger S3

Again there has been a lot of criticism over how expensive the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini is, but if you are buying a smaller version of a larger item then it only makes more sense that you pay a fairly high price for it.

 The overall quality loss

The build quality is still very good and the functionality of the device is nothing to be sneezed at. It is only when compared to the larger and more expensive Samsung Galaxy S3 that the mini looks weaker. The mini has a duller screen, a slower processor and a less sharp camera.

The Mini is no longer HD

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a larger HD screen. The HD aspect was lost with the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini but the AMOLED display means that the vibrant and bold colors are not really lost on the mini, and some people even criticized the larger S3 for having a screen that was just a bit too big for some people.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and has 2GB of RAM. The Mini has a dual-core version that runs at 1GHz. The mini comes with just 1GB of RAM. The mini is helped by Jelly Bean of the Android which makes up for whatever may be lost in processing power. The mini is behind the Google Nexus 4 that has the latest Android version at 4.2, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini has the 4.1 version. The Samsung Galaxy S3 mini has a very intuitive layout and interface. The shortcut icons are easier to reach because the screen is smaller.

The camera

The 5-megapixel camera cannot compare to the Samsung Galaxy S3 8-magapixel camera, but the mini’s camera is not exactly a big letdown. Most phones have a 5-megapixel camera and have had one for the last few years. Nobody complained then, so why are they so fussy now? The photos you can take are still very good, with the only function difference being that the mini’s camera takes a little longer to get into focus. It also has lots of little extras that you can play with, such as panorama and smile shot.
